YEEHAW JUNCTION, Fla. — A tractor-trailer crashed into the Desert Inn and Restaurant in Yeehaw Junction early Sunday morning, causing substantial damage to the historic site.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a 2018 semi-truck hauling fruit juice drove into the building at 3:15 a.m.
The driver, 50-year-old Mario Cawley of Chicago, Illinois, told troopers the world was dark and he didn’t realize he left the road.
No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.
“When I need to that corner I could not see the bottom, I could not see the lines or anything. it had been too dark,” said Cawley. “I normally never travel in the dark, but I wanted to urge on the brink of Jacksonville and that I was trying to place myself into an honest position.”
According to FHP, when tow trucks removed the truck, a part of the building collapsed.
“I tousled. I should have stayed at the opposite fueling station. I could not see the lines. If you continue that corner, you do not see the lines on the road,” Cawley said.
“I’ve never hit anybody before. I have never had an accident in 20 years,” Cawley added. “I couldn’t get out of any of the doors. Both of them were pinned. I had to climb out the window.”
